Snow Removal Westchester New York

Winter in Westchester County brings with it rain, wind, snow, ice, sleet and freezing temperatures making roads and walkways slippery, wet, danger zones just waiting for an accident to happen. Whether it’s the driveway or walkway on your own residential property, parking lots and sidewalks associated with your commercial business or apartment complex, you cannot risk the safety of your family, guests, customers, employees or tenants. In cold areas that get heavy ice and snowfall, icy roads are a major obstacle and hazard.

Snow and ice removal in a timely fashion is critical as it is always a priority to keep any means of transportation (walkways/driveways/roadways) open and safe to access by “de-icing”.

Many turn to their shovel or snow blower along with some sort of de-icing product to help melt ice. If you are going to tackle snow removal on your own, remember...

  • Dress appropriately
  • Use the right shovel
  • If you choose to use a snow blower make sure it’s been serviced and working properly
  • Know your snow and be careful to not overload the shovel with snow – watch your back
  • Take breaks and head inside for a while if it’s very cold
  • Have a strategy on where you will move the snow to

Know your De-Icing Products

When choosing a de-icing product, it’s important that you understand the process of de-icing with either salt and sand, so you can figure out which one is best for you depending on type of snow or ice and the temperature and future weather forecast.

- Salt

Salt is normally the first product that people consider. Salt helps with icy roads by lowering the freezing point of the water in the snow or ice, causing it to melt and, stay in liquid form longer. Be aware that if the temperature drops, the salt will not have the expected affect and will freeze.

Once some of the ice has become liquid, the salt dissolves into it and prevents it from refreezing at similar temperatures. Salt removes the ice from the road, melting it as long as the temperature is not too low.

While salt is traditionally considered the best solution to treating slippery paths, it can cause damage to plants, animals and pets, and vehicles. Chloride-based chemicals can sink into the soil contaminating the soil in our lawns and gardens, and can damage concrete and vehicles.

- Sand

Sand may be effective in providing some traction, however, it does not melt the ice. Sand works by improving traction over ice which helps to make the road safe and drivable and also allowing some traction when walking on icy/slippery road surfaces. Sand can be used effectively at any temperature. Sand is only effective as long as it remains on the surface. Once it becomes buried under more snow, it is no longer effective.

There are times when you can use a mix of salt combined with sand to improve both de-icing and traction.

While snow removal and de-icing on your own can be cost-effective, it poses its own dangers to the individual or staff/crew doing it.

Consider hiring a professional snow removal company who has the proper equipment and de-icing products to quickly and effectively remove the snow and ice, thus reducing the chance for any accidents.

If you are a commercial property manager or homeowner, you may want to consider some of these questions as a guide when you do your research on local snow removal companies.

Q: How long has your company been in the snow removal industry, particularly working with commercial clients?
The longer the better! Check for reviews on BBB, Angie’s List and Yelp.

Q: What kind of an equipment fleet do you have and what crews do you have available to clear the snow and ice from my property?
You need to know that they have the proper equipment and crew size to properly clear your snow areas. This also will help you assess if there is a major storm, will there be enough equipment and crew to serve all their customers.

Q: What’s your plan for clearing the snow on my property, when do you start the removal and what is the backup plan?
Understand when you can expect them to show up. Is it after 1 inch of snow or after 1 foot. How often will they come by to clear. What will be their approach to clearing, i.e. , sidewalks first, then parking lot, then other service sidewalks.

Q: How many clients do you have?
Also find our if it’s a combination of commercial and residential to determine if they have enough equipment and staff to service all their customers in a timely fashion.

Q: Do you operate 24 hours and do they have a 24-hour contact phone number?
